January 11 - The U.S. Surgeon General announces that smoking may harm health.
January 24 - The 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution goes into effect and states voting rights cannot be denied due to failure to pay taxes.
February 7 - The Beatles arrive in the U.S.
February 25 - Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) wins the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship.
March 14 - Jack Ruby is convicted in Dallas, Texas of the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, alleged assassin of John F. Kennedy.
March 26 - A severe earthquake occurs in Alaska, killing 66 and causing damages of close to $500 million.
April 13 - Sidney Poitier, for his role in Lilies of the Field, becomes the first African American actor to win an Oscar.
April 16 - Jerrie Mock is the first woman to fly solo around the world, taking 29 days.
July 2 - The U.S. Civil Rights Act is passed.
July 28 - NASA launches Ranger 7 to reach the moon and take photographs.
August 2 - An American destroyer is attacked off the coast of North Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin, and U.S. aircraft attack North Vietnamese bases.
August 19 - NASA launches Syncom 3 communications satellite which relays the opening ceremony of
the Olympic Games from Tokyo.
August 20 - The Office of Economic Opportunity is authorized.
September 26 - The Warren Commission releases its report on the assassination of President Kennedy.
October 14 - Martin Luther King, Jr. is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
November 24 - Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of assassinating John F. Kennedy, is shot by Jack Ruby.
November 28 - Mariner 4 is launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida and will transmit the first close-up photographs of Mars.
